You’ve scheduled time off from work, booked Fido with the dog sitter, purchased a few IG-worthy outfits — and then it hits you: your passport is about to expire. Panic sets in. Do you have to cancel your trip?
Not necessarily.
Thousands of travelers face this situation every year, and while airlines and immigration officials aren’t very forgiving, there are legitimate ways to get your passport expedited — even at the last minute — if you act quickly and follow the right steps. Here’s what to do based on how soon you’re traveling and where you should apply.
Post Offices & Local Acceptance Facilities:
Most travelers apply at U.S. Post Offices, courthouses, and some libraries. These locations accept first-time applications and many renewals. Appointments are usually required.
Regional Passport Agencies (Major Cities): If you live near cities such as Philadelphia or Washington, DC, you may apply directly at a passport agency only if you are traveling within 14 days and have proof of travel. Appointments are required.
Routine processing takes about 4–6 weeks. Some renewals may be completed by mail. Others require in-person application.
Expedited processing is recommended. Include the $60 fee and clearly mark “EXPEDITE” on your envelope.
You must schedule an in-person appointment at a Regional Passport Agency.
Your U.S. Senator or Congressperson may assist in true emergencies.
Adult Renewal: $130
Expedited Service: $60
Optional 1–2 Day Shipping: $22
First-Time Passport: $130 + $35 Acceptance Fee
Most countries require passports to be valid for at least six months beyond your return date.
