The town of Savusavu in the island nation of Fiji, is 5,000 miles away from Los Angeles, and a 20-hour, one-way flight from the East

coast on Air Pacific.

 

It is also the home of the Namale luxury resort that features several hundred acres of tropical paradise and is the brainchild of self-help guru, Tony Robbins, whose goal was to create a place where every need is both met, and anticipated.

 

There are a total of 21 villas or bures in Namale and, by design, there are never any more than 42 visitors on the property. Also, children under 18 are not permitted unless parents book an entire week, which can easily run into hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Celebrities such as Quincy Jones,  Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan have stayed there.

 

The rooms are equipped with theaters that include surround sound, internet, and the bars are all stocked with Fijan Gold beer and the popular Yellowtail Australian wines.

 

My bure was named “Bula” and was about 1,500 square-feet. When I arrived, there was a wooden placard with my name carved into it hanging on the door.   The stainless steel kitchen was filled with snacks and in the middle of the living room was a full-sized pool table on a beautiful hardwood floor.  It also featured an outdoor shower and my personal Jacuzzi.

 

One of the top daily highlights was to have a Mimosa and hot coffee while watching the sun rise from my deck. Some mornings I’d even soak in the hot tub–talk about a heavenly morning!

 

Breakfast at the on-site restaurant featured Eggs Benedict, pancakes with thick honey syrup and grilled cheese and bacon sandwiches alongside bottomless glasses of champagne.

 

As much as I wanted to stay in my room, sleep, eat, lounge and drink wine, I also wanted to visit the marketplace in Savusavu for some cultural sustenance.

 

Saturday morning is when many Fijans go to Savusavu to do their weekly shopping.  I took a speed boat over the Koro Sea where I experienced a major fruit market that included coconuts and pomegranate.

 

I sampled a lamb samosa, the Fijan version of a Jamaican beef patty, followed by a quick jaunt to the J. Hunter Pearl showroom for a look at the luminescent, Fiji-harvested pearls.

 

After plenty of walking and viewing the market place, getting back to the spa at Namale was a welcome treat.

 

The masseuse’s here are trained on the main island of Nadi and their hands are like magic. Each treatment starts with a relaxing foot soak followed by a choice of massages and treatments that range from hot stones, to manicures, pedicures and aromatherapy.

 

Namale also features fantastic food. The meats are wonderfully juicy and include chicken, beef, fresh seafood and vegetables. Each day the menu showcases something different, but if you want a dish you liked the day before, the chefs will have no problem preparing the meal again.

 

Some of the things you can do to burn off that food include golf, tennis, and running  or walking along miles and miles of trails with stunning scenery.

 

Also, the waters of Fiji are world-famous as a SCUBA divers paradise with plenty of diverse marine life, colorful underwater plants and astounding coral reefs.

 

Fiji may not be the easiest place to get to, but it’s certainly one of the easiest places to stay once you get there.
